Reiki: A Gentle Return to What’s Already Within

Reiki: A Gentle Return to What’s Already Within – There’s something comforting about discovering that healing isn’t something you find out there—it’s something that’s been quietly waiting inside you all along.

It isn’t magic. It’s not a trick. Reiki certainly isn’t something reserved for a chosen few. In fact, it feels like remembering a language your heart always knew, even if the world convinced you otherwise. As a result, many people begin with the hands-on approach, since it is simple and easy to remember where to place their hands. Through time and practice, practitioners often find their own way of doing things. For me, it is hands off because it allows me to feel the flow of energy better. It takes time…

Reiki = Universal Life Force Energy

Usui Reiki comes from Japan and is often translated as ‘universal life energy.’ But more than words or definitions, Reiki is about connection—energetic, emotional, and spiritual. When we make connections like this, unity achieves an amazing bond.

Imagine placing your hands gently on or slightly off someone and, without saying a word, offering a quiet reminder to their body and soul: ‘You are safe. You are seen. You are whole.’ That’s the heart of Reiki. As simple as that may seem, it really is the connections that create the healing.  This practice was introduced to the world by Mikao Usui, but it belongs to no one. Reiki is the kind of wisdom that lives in all of us. Some just remember it sooner than others. There are many styles and techniques. Again, the key is the proper connections.

How does Reiki work?

We are all made of energy. You’ve felt it before—walking into a room and picking up on the tension or peace without a single word being said. Or, by noticing somebody with a fixed glare towards you.

Reiki works with that energy. The practitioner doesn’t use their own energy. They are only a channel for universal energy and allow it to flow through their hands to wherever it’s needed. You might feel warmth, tingling, or even nothing at all. But what matters most isn’t the sensation—it’s the shift that happens inside.

After a session, remember to drink water and stay hydrated. The energetic shift can sometimes be felt for a couple of days afterwards. Paying attention to what is felt helps understand what is going on inside the body because it is healing.

Quick Example: The Power of Reiki

After one of my very first sessions working with somebody, I spoke with them a couple of weeks later. This is when I know there was a lot more to life. She told me the ulcer she had for 30 years was gone. That lasted not quite two weeks. After her next visit, it never came back. One of the interesting things is I had no idea she had an ulcer until the call afterwards. I did feel extra energy in the area but didn’t know what it meant. That is always a pleasant memory because it shows just how powerful we all are.

The 5 Reiki Principles

These principles aren’t rules. They’re reminders. Like gentle guideposts on a path back to yourself.

– Just for today, I will not be angry.
-Just For today, I will not worry.
– Just for today, I will be grateful.
– Just For today, I will do my work honestly.
– Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.

Just one day at a time. No perfection needed. Tomorrow is a brand-new beginning. You may want to think about creating some sort of art to be placed around where you are the most.  These little pieces of art can remind you and guide you toward who you really are.

The Three Levels of Reiki

Reiki isn’t a ladder you climb—it’s a spiral inward. Each level deepens your awareness and opens space for more trust and truth.

Level I is where you begin. You learn to work with energy and begin healing yourself. It’s like learning how to sit with your own silence.

Level II introduces sacred symbols and the ability to send healing across time and space. You start to notice just how far love can reach.

Level III, or Master Level, isn’t about power—it’s about presence. It’s where teaching begins and deeper surrender unfolds.

A typical Reiki session:

Usually, there is a massage table, and it is in what is hopefully a peaceful location where no interruptions will occur. On the table, you lie down fully clothed and relax. Maybe you close your eyes, maybe you don’t. The practitioner places their hands gently over different areas of your body. And then… nothing loud happens. No fireworks. No rituals. Just space.

Other times, in that space, something softly awakens. It might feel like warmth. Or it could feel like a release. It may feel like stillness. Whatever it is, it’s yours—and it’s exactly what’s needed. Some cry because the release was something deeply needed for a long time. Others smile at newfound peace. I’ve had some complain about discomfort as things work their way out. Others feel like they have had a nice nap. Or, it could be so subtle it isn’t even noticed at first. All are equally powerful.

Why Reiki? What’s the Point?

We live in a world full of doing. Reiki invites us back into being. It can help with stress, sleep, chronic pain, emotional overwhelm, or simply the quiet ache of disconnection. But beyond benefits and checklists, Reiki reminds us of who we are beneath the noise.  Sometimes the deepest healing comes from remembering we’re already whole.

Reiki and Self-Knowledge

Every time your hands meet your body in practice, you’re listening. To your fears. To your hopes. To the parts of you that have gone unheard.  Reiki opens a space where emotions can rise, patterns can soften, and clarity can return. It doesn’t fix you—it lets you feel yourself fully. And sometimes, that’s exactly what begins to heal you.

Learning Reiki: It’s Already in You

To learn Reiki is to remember something you’ve always known. With a Reiki attunement, a teacher helps reconnect you to that current of universal energy. From there, your practice becomes your own – quiet, personal, and profound. Reiki doesn’t require belief. It asks only for presence. Everything else comes in its own time.

If you’ve read this far, maybe something in you is already stirring. That part of you that knows healing doesn’t have to be loud… it just has to be real.

You are the answer!

You are the answer you’ve been waiting for. Reiki simply helps you remember.
