Anger
n. an emotion characterized by tension and hostility arising from frustration, real or imagined injury by another, or perceived injustice. It can manifest itself in behaviors designed to remove the object of the anger (e.g., determined action) or behaviors designed merely to express the emotion (e.g., swearing). Anger is distinct from, but a significant activator of, aggression, which is behavior intended to harm someone or something. Despite their mutually influential relationship, anger is neither necessary nor sufficient for aggression to occur.
Increased Heart Rate (Tachycardia)
The heart beats faster to pump more blood to muscles, preparing the body for action.
This can feel like a pounding or racing heart.
Muscle Tension
Muscles tighten, particularly in the jaw, shoulders, neck, and hands.
This may lead to clenching of fists, gritted teeth, or a stiff posture.
Shaking or Trembling
Adrenaline can cause the body to shake or tremble, especially in the hands or legs.
Heat or Warmth
A sense of heat or warmth may spread across the face, neck, or chest.
In some cases, people may experience a "hot flash" or face flushing as blood rushes to the skin.
Clenched Jaw or Teeth
Tension in the jaw or teeth grinding is common when angry, as the body instinctively prepares to "bite" or "strike."
Tightness in the Chest or Throat
A feeling of constriction in the chest or throat may occur, sometimes making it feel difficult to breathe.
The throat may feel tight as if words or a scream are stuck.
Sweating
Increased perspiration, especially on the palms, face, or back, is common due to the body's heightened state of arousal.
Flushed Face or Neck
The face or neck may turn red due to increased blood flow caused by the body's physiological response to anger.
Faster Breathing
Breathing becomes more rapid or shallow as the body takes in more oxygen in preparation for a potential physical reaction.
Headache or Tension
Intense anger can lead to headaches or a sensation of pressure in the head, often due to muscle tension in the neck and scalp.
Nausea or Stomach Discomfort
Anger can lead to a feeling of nausea, tightness, or "knotting" in the stomach, as blood flow shifts away from the digestive system.
Furrowing of the Brow
The facial expression associated with anger often includes furrowing of the brows or squinting. This is a reflexive action as part of the "fight" stance.
Increased Blood Pressure
Anger can cause an increase in blood pressure due to the body's heightened state of alertness.
These physical responses to anger are natural and are part of the body's way of preparing to take action in response to perceived threats or injustices. They can be intense, and over time, chronic anger can have negative health effects if not managed effectively.
