A way to think of emotions is as an alarm system for the body. When you really get down to it, the emotions are simply feelings within the body that are trying to tell us something. That may seem slightly underwhelming. It can also make complete sense because some emotions are extremely intense. Again, when you think of the emotion as an alarm it becomes clear the intensity is trying to get your attention. Small emotions without a lot of energy are easy to let slide right by. When the emotion is strong, you figure out that your body has been trying to tell you something for a while now and it didn’t seem to register with you, so now it has grown in strength. Now it has your attention.
The long and short of it is the body produces a sensation as it communicates letting us know there is something to pay attention to. They may be short in duration or longer which if not careful the emotion could turn into a mood or even a personality. The key to faster recovery of less than desireable emotions is to notice them sooner rather than later. The faster you can understand it for what it is, the faster you can let it go.
Psychologist and pioneer in the field of emotions, Paul Ekman, identified six basic emotions universally displayed through facial expressions. Ee may have more than one emotion at a time. When this happens, new emotions are created just as when mixing primary colors of red and yellow, to create the color orange. The same is true when the emotions of Interest and Serenity are realized at the same time to give us the new emotion of Optimism.
This page will continue to grow through time. Remember that some Blog posts will speak directly to emotions and how to better manage them. Realizing what they are and having the knowledge to make the best of them makes working with emotions much easier.
Keep in mind: Emotions are merely alarms for our mind and body. When we ask the right questions of ourselves and then actually listen to the answer, we begin to heal.
